As always, if you have questions or concerns, either email me at LJohnson@alpinedistrict.org or come talk to me directly. My office phone number is 801-610-8810 ext. 737102 Choir Audition Information for 2020-2021 Choir auditions are handled in a different manner this year because of the shutdown due to COVID-19. I would rather hear everyone in person, but that isn't possible this year. The good thing is that you don't need to be nervous about an in-person, live audition!!
There are several things to know about choir auditions this year. First, EVERYONE MAKES IT INTO A CHOIR!! There is a choir for everyone, and everyone has a place in choir! Here is a description of all of the Lone Peak choirs for 2020-2021. choir_descriptions_2020-2021.docx . Note that only juniors and seniors can be in A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers. Also note that students in Chamber Singers must also either have been in A Cappella Choir or concurrently be in A Cappella Choir. There is no exception to this requirement. Also note that there is no audition required for General Choir, which is only 1 semester.
Second, this year there will not be separate auditions for Chamber Singers. This is quite different from past years, but it's the way it needs to be for this year.
Third, there are two parts to the audition process this year. First of all, each student must complete the Choir Audition Form, which is a Google Form. To fill out the Choir Audition Form, click here.
Fourth and finally, after you have filled out the Choir Audition Form, make a video of you singing. First, after you say your name on your recording, sing a 1-minute sample of any style of singing that shows your very best singing. I'll be listening for several things; 1) tone quality (focused sound with good space that is well supported), 2) intonation (how in tune are you singing), and 3) the diction (tall, focused vowels and energized consonants). Second, after you sing your song excerpt, please sing a one-octave major scale (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do), up and down. Again, I'm listening for intonation. You don't have to use "do-re-mi" if you don't want to, but simply sing on "la la la" or whatever "text" you choose. Since you are making a video, know that I'll be looking for whether you open your mouth, drop your jaw, and generally have good posture.
Send the video in the smallest file possible. Be sure you turn off 4K video.
Please email your video to me at email@example.com by May 28, especially if you are auditioning for Chamber Singers. If you choose not to audition by video, that's fine. It just means that I'll hear you in the fall when school starts. This will only be for the auditioned choirs except Chamber Singers. If you choose to wait, please send me an email so that I can know how much time to set aside for fall auditions. But please go ahead and complete the Choir Audition Form before fall.
If you have a friend who you think would like to sing in a choir, have them fill out the Choir Audition Form and do the audition. They should also take care of registration for the class too. The more, the merrier!! Remember that there's room for everybody!
Good luck! I know that you'll do great. I'm excited to hear each of you and have you be part of a great choral tradition at Lone Peak High School.
